A little Ingelheim Christmas story
Lecture on the Christmas market at the castle church
In 787, Charlemagne (748–814) celebrated Christmas in the Ingelheim Palatinate. In the Middle Ages and into the early modern period, Christmas was celebrated publicly, in church and on the streets. It was only around 200 years ago that the festival developed into a children's Christmas with a Christmas tree decorated with candles and a feast. The lecture by museum employee Dr. Nicole Nieraad-Schalke sheds light on the history of Ingelheim's Christmas traditions - including the Christmas tree, nativity play, Christmas market - and provides answers to the question of how St. Nicholas, Santa Claus and Christ Child relate to each other.
