“Adorned with foreign feathers” - A look inside Caroline von Erlanger's hatbox
Short lecture
To this day, people like to adorn themselves with bird feathers. In the past, many birds had to die for this. This not only led to the decimation of the bird species concerned in terms of numbers, but also to species decline. In response to this, the first bird and nature conservation associations were founded in the 19th century. Wealthy ladies in particular appreciated the fashionable feather ornaments. The museum at the Kaiserpfalz has two such fashion items by Caroline von Erlanger (1843 -1918): a cap and a muff made from the feathers of great crested grebes. The lecture is a short excursion into the fashion world of the time and its historical context.
