More than wine - Inclusion in viticulture -

My brother's heart

The traditional image of the winemaker has changed significantly - his work has long since gone far beyond simply making wine. Environmental protection, sustainability, inclusion - social issues are finding their way into wine cellars. Can you taste it?

When Klaus talks about Kristian, you can't miss the joy in his voice: "My brother is my brother's heart. It works really well." Kristian runs the Dauermann winery in Ingelheim. His brother Klaus has Down's syndrome. When he visits Kristian with his boys and girls from the workshop, the joy is great. Every fortnight, the vineyard becomes a place for socialising, learning and having fun at work. A great change from everyday life in the workshop!

The employees of the in.betrieb gGmbH workshop for people with disabilities had been looking for new opportunities for their employees for some time and finally found them in their collaboration with the Dautermann winery. Under the motto "Vineyard instead of workshop", people with intellectual disabilities help out at the winery within the scope of their abilities - from pruning and harvesting to pressing, the project offers the opportunity to accompany every step of the winemaking process.

The aim of the inclusive programme is to prepare people with disabilities to be able to work in a winery in the long term.

"Here you can really combine family and wine in a wonderful way!" says Kristian Dautermann about his favourite project. It also offers the opportunity to experience his brother in a completely different way - with his friends in the vineyard!

The project also gave rise to the idea of an exclusive and inclusive wine: a very high-quality Pinot Noir called "Das Blaue Schaf - Pinot Noir", which combines enjoyment and social responsibility in the best possible way. A large proportion of the proceeds go to charitable organisations in Ingelheim and the surrounding area. The artist Rainer Bonk provided his "Blue Sheep", created as a serial work of art, for the project as a symbol of human togetherness, tolerance and greater inclusion. The sheep are also produced in a workshop for people with disabilities. Art meets wine meets heart - a project that sets an example!
