The imposing castle church in Ober-Ingelheim, with its idyllic grounds, is one of the historical highlights in Ingelheim and is always the backdrop for festivals and celebrations. The district offers the most beautiful romantic nooks and crannies in the red wine town. The former splendid noble courtyards in Stiegelgasse and Edelgasse tell their own stories of that time. Today, the former Cistercian convent "Engelthal" in Edelgasse is a popular location for events and wine enjoyment.
The 31m high tower was built on the Westerberg between 1907 and 1912 by the then just created Bismarck society. It was an expression of patriotic feelings and a counterpart of the Niederwald-monument at Rüdesheim, erected in 1871. The architect Wilhelm Kreis from Eltville created an edifice combining art nouveau and neo-Romanism. This style became a pattern for similar monuments of Bismarck adoration elsewhere in the empire. Rough hewed regional limestone blocks give the tower a defensive character. Inside an iron stairway leads to the…
The evangelical (protestant) Burgkirche, formerly St. Wigbert, is part of one of the best preserved defence churches in south-western Germany. It has an edification history that can be traced back several centuries. The Romanic church tower of the early 12th century with its late Gothic battlements and the bay tower dominates the three-nave late Gothic church. The different heights of the roofs show the various building periods in the first half of the 15th century, and can be seen from the outside. The defensive western facade with the…
The all-around accessible main wall was mainly constructed in the 15th century. Its most vulnerable flank at the Mainzer Berg was strengthened by the addition of a Zwinger (inner defence gate). The only entrance (at Grabengasse/Kirchgasse) received an outer gate, a so-called “Barbarkane”. The second, southern breach was created in 1873 and provided access to the vineyards. The most salient point is the so-called Malakoff tower - formerly the “Alte Wache” (old guard post) with its dungeon. It offers an impressive…
The lower part of Stiegelgasse and Edelgasse form one of the early cores of Ober-Ingelheim’s settlement. Here a significant number of aristocratic estates were concentrated. Most were singular farmsteads surrounded by large gardens or parks. The estate Stiegelgasse 65 with the Bodepark once belonged to the von Beuser family, one of the two sidelines of an early mentioned old Ingelheim kin of nobles. Around 1837, on this site, the estate of the wine and vinegar merchant Philipp August Gerhard was created, using old foundations. The…
The two flanking towers of the gate Ohrenbrücker Tor with their rounded-arch decoration, first mentioned in 1381 and leading in the direction of Westerberg/Rheinweg, are particularly well preserved. The pointed gateway and the consoles, reminding of a pitch spout, were reconstructed only in 1964. To cross the Selz, in this sector very swampy, the main traffic had to pass a ford, while pedestrians could use a small bridge. (Obere Brücke). Since 1908 the street passes outside the gate. Slightly towards the south-east of the gate…
