Smokey, exotic, wild, but also classic - the wines of Jens Bettenheimer unmistakably resemble their creator. A winemaker, like a father or a mother, must educate and nurture the vine, so that it can flourish and bring its fruits to maturity, in order to find fulfillment in a great wine. Far away in far-away New Zealand, the young winemaker learned how to make individual wines and reinterpret classic grape varieties with cellar master Hätsch Kalberer. The journey is the goal: in meticulous and ambitious work, the numerous vineyards, over 30 years old, are nurtured before flowering, and every second shoot is removed from the branch. The interaction of the moon phases is taken into account in the vineyard work to guarantee an optimal leaf-fruit ratio. The grape harvest in small containers allows the grape processing without any pumping. Jens' heart is attached to the classic grape varieties, which are presented in a robe that you have never experieced before. Jens Bettenheimer consistently focuses on the slowest possible spontaneous fermentation and stores the wines gently until the bottling. Low temperatures on the yeast promote inner density and longevity. Without frills in the winemaking, he fills the wines on the bottle and tries to preserve the purist clarity. All red wines are stored on the mash after fermentation, exclusively in Rheinhessen oak wood barrel or in oak barrels. Smokey, powerful wines, far from the mainstream, are the result. The residual sweetness and the alcohol content should be as low as possible, depending on and specified for the vintage. Many of his wines are true time snails.

Ingelheimer Sonnenhang

Ingelheimer Sonnenhang

Sun, Selz and super wines

Not to be confused with the 1-hectare single vineyard "Ingelheimer Sonnenberg" in the middle of the city. The Sonnenhang is 88 hectares in size and is located in the extension of Ingelheim-Süd and on the Selz River. Sonnenhang and Sonnenberg are quasi-synonyms. This name comes from the generally favorable position towards the sun. Here, the Mainzer Berg slopes west-southwest toward the Selz Valley and allows optimal sun exposure. On limestone, loess and loam grow a variety of vines of rather strong style: Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. In the soil there are fossilized corals and snails.

Appenheimer Hundertgulden

Appenheimer Hundertgulden

Carbonate, Rich, Gold: Riesling from Hundertgulden

It is Germany's most carbonate-rich vineyard. The lime- and salt-rich soil "Terra Fusca" was formed over 50 million years ago and was once a coral reef in the primordial sea. Today, it is mainly Rieslings that grow there, producing elegant wines with fine fruit aromas. Easily digestible top wines with a unique minerality. Carbones are salts. The current site name "Hundertgulden" probably dates back to the 14th century: At that time, the vineyard by the Westerberg changed hands several times. The new owners paid large sums in gold florins from the river Rhein. This vineyard is a real gold treasure!

Heee-Haaw: Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Silvaner from the Donkey Trail

So called donkey trails often led to a mill and were only wide enough for a donkey carrying a bag to walk on. There are still mill buildings in Appenheim today, some of them with restaurants. This single vineyard was first mentioned in 1375. Donkeys are rarely seen there today, but ambitious winegrowers with tractors or jeeps. The subsoil is a limestone base with a light loess-loam soil on top. Rieslings, Pinot Blanc and Silvaner/Sylvaner grow on the southern slope. They stand for fruitiness and minerality, volume and creaminess. These wines have depth and power.
