Emperor Charlemagne once laid the foundations for Ingelheim's wine culture when he brought the first Burgundy vines to the red wine town. Wine has characterised the town and its traditions ever since. The winegrowers are particularly fond of red grapes - it is not without reason that Ingelheim is nicknamed the ‘red wine town’. With almost 50 per cent of its vineyards planted with red varieties, Ingelheim is truly unique in Rheinhessen.
